Robert Spiller is the poultry specialist for the animal science department. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Cal Poly and his doctorate in poultry nutrition at Oregon State University.

Spiller manages all aspects of the Cal Poly poultry unit and teaches most of the poultry science courses. He works closely with all aspects of the commercial poultry industry in California.

Spiller created an egg distribution infrastructure for the Cal Poly poultry unit. Cal Poly eggs are currently sold to restaurants and grocery stores from San Simeon in northern San Luis Obispo County to Orcutt in northern Santa Barbara County. Spiller also acts as adviser to the poultry unit enterprise projects and is the adviser to Cal Poly’s Poultry Club.


Professional memberships include Pacific Egg and Poultry Association and Poultry Science Association. Dr. Spiller holds positions on the Student Advisory Committee and Research Evaluation Committee within the Pacific Egg and Poultry Association.
