Deborah Beckett teaches applied animal embryology in the animal science department. The course is taught in the new biotechnology laboratory and shows the students another side of animal science.
She received her bachelor’s degree in animal science from University
of California at Davis and her master’s degree in animal science
emphasizing reproductive physiology from UC Davis. Prior to coming to Cal
Poly, Beckett was a clinical embryologist at Nashville Fertility Center
in Nashville, Tennessee. She draws on her professional experiences to teach
the students new and innovative technologies such as: embryo splitting,
freezing and cloning.
In addition to teaching embryology, Beckett conducts research in the field
of biotechnology/embryology. The research consists of biopsying embryos
and then sexing the single cell biopsy using various DNA analyses. Currently,
she is trying to determine which DNA analyses are the most accurate and
effective and which biopsy protocol allows for the highest pregnancy rates
after embryo biopsy. Both undergraduate and graduate students participate
in her research projects. |
