Andrew Thulin is the department head for the animal science department. Thulin obtained his bachelor's degree in animal science from Cal Poly and his master's and doctorate degrees in nonruminant nutrition from Kansas State University.

Thulin is responsible for approximately 5,000 acres of ranch land, and nearly 600 undergraduate students in animal and poultry science, at the fourth largest college of agriculture in the United States. Thulin oversees strong programs in equine, beef and poultry production as well as meat science, pre-veterinary medicine and biotechnology, by maintaining close communication with government agencies, allied industry, and commodity organizations.

Prior to joining Cal Poly in September of 1998, Thulin was manager of Technology Deployment for the Animal Division of Cargill, Inc., for seven years. He directed deployment of nutrition and production technologies and business management in 14 countries, in addition to the United States.

Prior to joining Cargill, Thulin held a three-way appointment in extension, teaching and research, and served as the state Extension Swine Leader, at Michigan State University for nearly seven years. He was adviser to five graduate students and has been author or co-author of more than 30 articles and abstracts in refereed journals, 20 experiment station research reports, and numerous invited papers and newsletter articles. Thulin has also served as a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Animal Science.
