Allen Pettey joined the animal science department in March 2004 as the
new swine professor and supervisor of the Swine Unit. Pettey teaches ASCI
222,systems of swine production, ASCI 223, systems of sheep production
labs, ASCI 350, applied nonruminant nutrition and ASCI 102, principles
of animal science.
Pettey said he wants to involve students; open doors for them to an industry
they might not know existed. Pettey’s students will gain exposure
to cutting-edge practices in the swine industry.
He grew up in Bloomington, Calif., near San Bernardino, where his family
raised purebred Southdown sheep. Pettey earned his bachelor’s degree
in animal science at Cal Poly where he was a member of the livestock judging
team.
Two years later, at Oklahoma State University he obtained a master’s
degree in swine nutrition. Before returning to Poly as a professor, Pettey
secured another degree. In 2004, he completed a doctorate degree in swine
nutrition from the University of Kentucky.
As a professor, Pettey teaches the science of animal production and guides
students as they develop their skills in the management and production
of healthy, high quality livestock and the conception and completion of
scientifically sound research projects. He said he will help students master
basic scientific concepts and apply those concepts to a better understanding
of a whole animal system.
His research interests include applied swine research projects in nutrition,
reproduction, housing systems and animal welfare. Regarding nonruminant
nutrition, his interests include environmental impacts of livestock production
and the growth and development of whole body tissues.
Pettey is a member of the American Society of Animal Science.
