Students have the opportunity to participate in numerous enterprises at all of the animal units. Enterprises that are particularly helpful to students planning to attend veterinary school are:
Bull Test - Students on the enterprise doctor sick bulls and second year participants can apply for health management positions.
Heifer Calving Enterprise - Students learn the different
stages of parturition and the signs associated with each stage and are
required to diagnose and treat sick calves.
Commercial Ewe Enterprise - Similar to the Heifer Calving Enterprise, students learn the stages and signs of parturition and doctor sick animals.
Artificial Insemination Enterprise - Students learn the hormones associated with estrus and pregnancy and often use hormone therapy to synchronize cattle and breed them.
Breeding Enterprise - Students learn the proper techniques
for breeding and foaling mares and can assist in the current equine embryo
transfer and cryopreservation research projects.
In addition to these opportunities, the vet clinic employs four to eight students to assist with managing the facility. To be eligible, students should have completed a number of the veterinary courses offered by the department. For information contact Dr.
Jaymie Noland or Dr.
Dale Smith.
