Equine Breeding Enterprise

Prerequisites: ASCI 224, ASCI 333

Duration: January through July (includes winter and spring quarters), students apply fall quarter prior to upcoming breeding season.

Brief description: Students manage the Cal Poly Equine Center breeding program under the guidance of the enterprise adviser. This includes:

  • mare management
  • stallion management
  • foal management
  • assisted reproductive technologies
  • exposure to embryo and oocyte transfer
  • semen collection and analysis

Skills required: Competency in skills taught in prerequisite courses

Student responsibilities: Each student assigned one to three mares to foal out during the season, student must attend breeding labs at least twice per week to perform reproduction services on Cal Poly mares and stallions.

Benefit to students: Students gain the skills of equine artificial insemination, ovulation and pregnancy monitoring, stallion handling skills, semen analysis, exposure to advanced assisted reproductive technologies, management of mares and foals, as well as a management of a small breeding operation.

Quarter Horse Enterprise

Prerequisites: ASCI 224, ASCI 344, ASCI 345

Duration: Students apply winter quarter, project runs through spring, summer and the first part of fall quarter (variable due to sale dates).

Brief description: Six students start and train their assigned two-year old horses. The horses are trained to work cattle, ride on trails, and perform arena work like stops and turn-arounds. The project horses are sold at the National Reining Cow Horse Snaffle Bit Futurity in Reno, Nev.

Skills Required: Competency in skills taught in prerequisite courses, past experience helps but is not required, in the selection process, emphasis is placed on involvement at the Equine Center. Past experience both at Cal Poly and outside is considered. Class level and standing are considered.

Student Responsibilities: Students are responsible for developing a budget, the daily care of their horses and the marketing of their prospects.

Training includes:

  • groundwork/gentling of horses
  • acceptance of saddle
  • acceptance of other equipment
  • ability to work with cattle
  • ability to work in an arena
  • trailer loading and hauling
  • gathering and branding cattle

Benefit to Students: Students have the opportunity to advance their current training skills associated with starting cutting, reining, and reined cow horse futurity prospects. Some of the opportunities include riding with professional trainers at their facilities or at Cal Poly, working for NRCHA and working for the Mid-State Fair. Professional trainers include: Ted Robinson, Sandy Collier, Jake Gorrell, Jon Roeser, Derrick Tartaglia, Jeff Walker, Les Vogt and others.

Thoroughbred Enterprise

Prerequisites: ASCI 224, ASCI 260

Duration: Students apply in winter quarter, enterprise lasts spring quarter through early fall quarter

Brief description: Selected students sales prep Cal Poly Thoroughbred yearlings for sale at a fall Thoroughbred racing yearling sale. Sales prepping includes desensitizing horses to bathing, grooming, hoof care, longeing, groundwork, trailer loading, hauling and horse presentation at sales.

Skills Required: Competency in skills gained through prerequisite courses.

Student Responsibilities: Students are in charge of the nutritional regimen, daily exercise, training and grooming and health care of the project horses.

Benefit to Students: Students learn to work as a team within the context of the Thoroughbred industry. Students learn basic handling and horse presentation skills. They are introduced to the Thoroughbred racing industry in California and have the opportunity to attend various industry events like breeders association gatherings and premiere California racing events.
